As we continue to explore the world's most expensive wines, we take a look at Italy's Tuscany, the birthplace of the Renaissance.

Tuscany is a region rich in art, history, olive groves and, of course, wine.

However, where Tuscany is unusual, especially when compared to the other top echelons of the wine world, is that it has some serious big hitters but unlike Burgundy's most expensive which currently sits at $26,046, the most expensive Tuscan wine taps out at $1165.

The region's dynamism, however, is on a different scale. Not to say that there are no rules in Tuscany but, as these ten wines show, the diversity of grape varieties used is noticeable. Unsurprisingly the Tuscan stalwart Sangiovese dominates the pack, but there is a significant peppering of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and even a dash of Cabernet Franc breaking it all up.

This diversity is reflected in the winemaking – with both Burgundy and Bordeaux, it is safe to have certain expectations when it comes to guessing a flavor profile. A red from the right bank of Bordeaux is likely to be plusher and more fruit-forward than its left bank counterpart. However, when it comes to the wines of Tuscany, it's hard to know what you're getting unless you're deeply familiar with the various subzones and what each of them represent.

The best Tuscan reds tend to be mid-weight – like a Bordeaux – rich in cherry fruit and cut with a fine acidity set against a deeper backdrop of smoke, nuts and a leathery earthiness reminiscent of a farmyard, the very best tend to be able to cellar for decades.

Unsurprisingly, the world's most expensive wines from Tuscany naturally also represent some of the region's best expressions.

Leading the most expensive, with the sizeable price of $1165 and a score of 93 points, is the Brunello di Montalcino Riserva by Case Basse di Gianfranco Soldera. One of the estate's most lauded wines, Case Basse di Gianfranco Soldera are known for their Brunello which often sell out on allocation, and their Brunello di Montalicino Riserva is no different, regularly scooping rave reviews. The wine is said to have smoky notes of cherry and tobacco, while the older vintages are said to age like fine Burgundy.

Second up is another wine from Case Basse di Gianfranco Soldera, this time their Brunello di Montalcino DOCG. Although, at $836, it is significantly cheaper than their Riserva, but still with a hefty price tag. Although when it comes to the critics, it actually scores higher than its stablemate, boasting an aggregated score of 95 points. The 2009 vintage was described by critic Tom Cannavan as having a "fabulous blood-streaked nose, chestnut and game, spices and just very soulful".

Taking third spot is the Imeneus Toscana IGT by Fattorie dei Dolfi, an estate known for its strong sustainability and biodynamic principles. Named after the son of Aphrodite and Bacchus, Imeneus was the god of marriage, the wine itself is ruby red and rich in spiced fruit and has, so far, done well with the critics commanding an aggregated score of 92 points.

In fourth place is the ‘L Bruno de’ Venti from Fattorie dei Dolfi. Unlike the first three which have all been unrivaled tributes to Sangiovese, the “L Bruno de‘ Venti is mostly Merlot with a dash of Cabernet Franc, all from very old vines. The wine is then aged in neutral barriques and, on release, it tends to exhibit aromatic notes of cherry, plum and spice. Although not enough critics have tasted it to create an aggregated score, for $637, the quality can be assumed.

Number five is the 'Ll Amor de' Santi – yet another wine from Fattorie dei Dolfi. However, unlike their previous wines on this list, this wine is a red blend between Cabernet Franc and Alicante. Exceedingly rare, this wine is only made in certain years and has become highly collectible as a result which – at $622 – is almost bargain territory when compared to some Burgundies.

Made from pure Sangiovese, these wines are designed to age, and are said to exude notes of tobacco smoke, cherry, crushed rose and leather. Although they come in at $620, midway on this list, they boast an absolutely stunning score of 95 points, when it comes to this wine, the reviews really do speak for themselves.

Seventh is another wine from Fattorie dei Dolfi, this time their Bianco per Amore. As the name suggests, it is a white wine – a blend between Pinot Noir and Chardonnay – and the only white wine to feature on this list. Although it has not yet made a serious round through the critics to be awarded an aggregated score, at $559, the quality is somewhat assured.

This Vin Santo di Montepulciano is very much a dessert wine that, according to Wine Enthusiast, offers deep, rich notes of cherry, menthol, honey and hazelnut – it has a tremendous score of 95 points which $468 is starting to appear somewhat reasonable, especially compared to some of its bed fellows.

In penultimate place is the Matarocchio from Marchesi Antinori – although more specifically from the Tenuta Guado al Tasso estate. The wine is, unusually, pure Cabernet Franc and is one of the most acclaimed wines to come from the Bolgheri region. Designed to age, the wine commands an impressive aggregated score of 94 points, and a not too outrageous price tag of $454 – one to definitely cellar.

A complex blend between Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot, this wine has been described by Falstaff as having complex "notes of cardamom, cinnamon, blackberry and cassis. Polished on the palate with plenty of fine-meshed tannin, blackberry and tobacco." With a score of 94 points, it sure is pricey at $450 but – for many – worth the investment.

Although Tuscan cuisine is often looked upon as simple - very delicious, of course, who doesn't like the bright tomato flavors of panzanella or the earthy chicken liver paté crostinis? Their wines, however, have long since left the realms of simplicity and all that entails, including price, although they still have some way to go before coming anywhere near Burgundy or even Bordeaux.
